Is the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer GSe a good car?
Fast estates are cool. It’s just a fact. So if you’re looking for some quick practicality, the new Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer GSe will surely have caught your eye.
GSe is the new name for Vauxhall’s fast electrified stuff. Although the ‘e’ stands for electric, we don’t have a full EV version just yet – here the standard Astra Sports Tourer plug-in hybrid powertrain is used.
So what’s new? Well aside from those three letters on the boot, Vauxhall has given the Astra Sports Tourer some mechanical upgrades that should make it more capable in the twisty stuff.
Those upgrades amount to some stiffer suspension springs and new dampers from Koni, as well as more direct steering that should make the front end feel more responsive.
Despite this, the plug-in hybrid powertrain hasn’t actually been given any more performance. Fortunately it’s already pretty powerful, making 225hp and 360Nm of torque. The electric range is just under 40 miles, so the average commute could be completed without touching a drop of petrol. CO2 emissions of just 26g/km result in a company car-friendly benefit-in-kind rate of 12%.
The suspension upgrades should make the Astra Sports Tourer handle sweetly
As well as the mechanical upgrades, there are a few aesthetic tweaks, too. The ride height has been dropped 10mm, which helps the handling a touch while giving the Astra Sports Tourer a meaner stance.
You also get 18-inch alloy wheels, a black roof and black Griffin badges on the outside, while inside, the seats get Alcantara upholstery and there’s a leather steering wheel that’s only available in the GSe.
The equipment list is likely to be similar to the hatchback, with a 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking sensors and Matrix LED headlights among the highlights. In the hatchback, you can also switch to Nappa leather seat upholstery for £2,000.
Safety systems include lane departure warning, emergency braking and blind spot alert, while adaptive cruise control is standard across the range.
