That's all set to change with the imminent arrival of the MG Cyberster and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, but if you can't wait for either of those models there are a few zero-emission performance cars that are worth taking a look at. Like many electric cars, the Porsche Taycan is incredibly quick in a straight line – especially in high-performance Turbo S guise. What really makes the Taycan stand out is the fact that it’s also great fun in corners – it handles like a Porsche should. On top of this, it looks like a spaceship and is comfortable when you want to take it easy. Alternatives offer more range, and it’s not particularly practical, but the Taycan is good enough to drive that they are unlikely to be deal breakers.

While it might be more of an SUV than a sports car, the Kia EV6’s futuristic looks certainly help it stand out. It handles pretty well for a more family-orientated EV, but if you’re looking for maximum fun you’ll want the GT model. It’s expensive, but with 585hp available you’ll embarrass supercars away from the lights. Negatives? Even the regular EV6 is quite uncomfortable over bumps and it’s the same story with the GT.

The Tesla Model 3 was already one of the best electric cars you can buy, but a fairly comprehensive update in 2023 made it quieter, more comfortable and better to drive. There’s no ‘Performance’ version of the updated car just yet, but even the regular version is more than quick enough and is pretty capable in corners. You get excellent range, too, so you won’t need to top the batteries up all the time. Interior quality isn’t as good as most premium alternatives, though.

The Audi e-tron GT is mechanically identical to the Porsche Taycan, but offers a more understated, sophisticated appearance. And in RS form, ballistic performance. It’s not quite as fun nor capable in corners as the Porsche, but it’s fantastic for demolishing motorway miles in comfort. It’s a bit of a shame, then, that like the Taycan it doesn’t have the best range.

There’s room for the whole family on board, too, while the battery range is decent. Newer models have tweaked suspension so it’s not as uncomfortable as earlier versions, but it’ll still make you wince if you hit a pothole.

The BMW i4’s looks might not be to everyone’s tastes, but its impressive pace and grippy handling mean this is still an excellent electric performance saloon. The M50 is the one to go for if you want extra power, because it has been developed by BMW’s excellent M division, so you get wicked performance and excellent all-wheel drive grip. Rear seat space isn’t great, though, so bear this in mind if you regularly carry people in the back seats.

The Cupra Born isn’t really trying to be a performance car. However, it’s good to drive and capable enough on a twisty road to justify its mean and sporty appearance. On top of this, the interior is properly spacious, and you get an impressive electric range if you go for the big battery model. It’s more of a warm hatch than a hot hatch, but if you just want a family runaround that’s also good for the occasional B-road blast it’s a great option.

The regular MG4 is one of the best value electric cars you can buy. In turn, the sporty MG4 XPower is probably the best value electric performance car. For the price of a good petrol hot hatch, you get 435hp and all-wheel drive, contributing to a 0-60mph time of 3.8 seconds – equivalent to a Porsche 911 Carrera 4. It is a bit of a shame, then, that there have been no suspension upgrades over the regular car, so the XPower isn’t quite as impressive in corners as it is in a straight line.

Like the idea of an electric sports car but miss the sound of a combustion engine? Abarth has you covered with the 500e. This little hot hatch comes with a speaker under the car that mimics the sound of a petrol engine. It’s a fun little gimmick that gives the car a quirky character to go with its suitably shouty looks. The range is poor and there’s not much space inside, but the Abarth 500e doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a genuinely endearing trait.

Skoda has given its sporty vRS treatment to the excellent yet resolutely sensible Enyaq SUV, which – put simply – just results in a slightly faster Enyaq, rather than an out-and-out sports car. It’s quick, but it does feel rather at odds with the standard Enyaq’s raison d'être without adding enough sparkle to justify its vRS badge. If you like the Enyaq, and like the idea of more power, it’s fine, but it doesn’t feel as special as Skoda’s combustion-engined vRS models usually do. The vRS is also offered on the Enyaq Coupe.

Seeing as electric cars are still a relatively new phenomenon (though they’re becoming more and more popular all the time), there aren’t all that many electric sports cars available to buy just yet. Over time this will change as EVs become even more common, but for now most car makers are focussing on launching electric cars that have the most mainstream appeal - such as electric family SUVs.

Not counting multi-million pound electric hypercars such as the Rimac Nevera, the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT are arguably the only bonafide electric sports cars available for ‘normal’ amounts of money. That said, in the next few years they’ll be joined by battery-powered versions of the Porsche Cayman, Audi R8 and Maserati MC20 - all of which should be properly fun EV sports cars.

The fastest electric sports car that is included in this list is the Porsche Taycan. If you go for the range-topping Turbo S version, you’ll be getting your hands on a family-friendly electric performance saloon that’s not only capable of accelerating to 60mph from a standstill in just 2.8 seconds, but one that can go on to hit a top speed of 162mph too. Another honourable mention from this list is the range-topping Audi RS e-tron GT (0-60mph in 3.3 seconds, limited top speed of 155mph).

The Tesla Model S Plaid is also an exceptionally fast electric car, but it's worth noting that while you can buy it in the UK, it's only offered in left-hand drive. With 1,020hp it’ll accelerate to 60mph in a staggering 2.0 seconds, and max out at 200mph. The ultimate electric sports car, however, is the Rimac Nevera. Priced at around £2,000,000, this Croatian hypercar is the fastest EV in the world, with a top speed of 258mph.

If you’re looking for an electric sports car that won’t break the bank, it has to be the MG4 XPower. For about £35,000 – the price of many regular electric hatchbacks – you get 435hp and 600Nm of torque. The 3.8-second 0-60mph time makes the XPower quicker than many petrol sports car – and in a Carwow drag race it left a Nissan GT-R and Lamborghini Gallardo in its dust.

Because electric sports cars tend to develop considerably more power from their motors than your average, run-of-the-mill electric family SUV will, their range often tends to be a bit lower. 

That’s not to say you’ll find yourself unable to drive long distances in one, however – the Tesla Model 3 can do up to 421 miles. That’s enough to get you from London to Edinburgh in one hit, providing you drive very sensibly. But allowing for fast-charging top ups during motorway service station coffee breaks, the journey would still be pretty fuss-free.
